Your Salisbury Pantry – A Social Supermarket

This friendly shop, at 59 Catherine Street, Salisbury, is a membership scheme for people on low incomes who struggle to balance the demands on their household income.

The shop is run by Salisbury City Council’s Communities Team and is part of a franchise run by Church Action on Poverty called ‘Your Local Pantry’. This shop grew from a food support project launched during the Pandemic in 2020, originally running out of the City Council Community Centres with the support of Anybody Can Cook.

The Communities Team have created this social supermarket to ensure we can continue to take action on food poverty in Salisbury.

Social Supermarkets – not just about food!
We are a place to shop and choose your food at a low cost, and we can do this because we stock donated and redistributed food, but we are also a place where people can ask for advice and be signposted to other sources of support.
Our aim is for Your Salisbury Pantry to be a space where members can build connections, confidence and sense of belonging in the community. Members can also volunteer alongside us to help us achieve these aims, together.

FAQ’s

Where does your food come from?
Our food is sourced from Fareshare and donations are received from local supermarkets and suppliers including Waitrose, Tesco Extra Southampton Road, Tesco Metro Castle Street, Lidl, Bookers & The Pantry Partnership

Are you the same as The Pantry Partnership?
In short, no. Pantry Partnership is a separate, but similarly named, social enterprise running ins Salisbury for much longer than we have been around. The Pantry Partnership uses surplus food to connect people through cooking and sharing meals and supports a range of different food projects across the city. Whereas Your Salisbury Pantry focuses specifically on alleviating food poverty for our members and connecting them to advice and services related to the challenges of low income. We do, however, work with the Pantry Partnership, stocking their volunteer made meal, created from surplus produce in our chillers. We are looking at more ways to collaborate in the future.

Is Your Salisbury Pantry Accessible?ca
Your Salisbury Pantry has an accessible entrance to the rear of the shop.
Our front door is only accessible via some steps so the rear entrance, suitable for anyone with mobility issues, people with pushchairs and anyone using a wheelchair or frame, is used by a number of our members.

This entrance is accessed via the Brown Street Car Park, through a gate (open during our opening hours) near the Bell and Crown Pub at the Ivy Street entrance to the car park.

All our membership materials can be provided in digital format or large print on request.

We aim to make everyone feel welcome and if you have any questions or comments about accessibility at the shop, please contact us salisburypantry@salisburycitycouncil.gov.uk and we will be happy to listen and help.

Do I need to shop every week if I am a member?
No. Once signed up, members can shop whenever they need to. Some members rely on us every week. Others use us to top up their cupboards monthly or fortnightly. Whatever works for you.

Can I volunteer on this project?
We have been very lucky to be inundated with volunteers offering their support, we therefore not currently seeking volunteers for the shop.
However, if you wish to put your name down for helping in the future or find out more about other volunteering opportunities across the work of the Communities team, please do feel free to email us salisburypantry@salisburycitycouncil.gov.uk
